Vice Chancellor's Profile
Prof. Hellicy C. Ng'ambi (Ph.D.)
Prof Hellicy C. Ngambi is the Vice Chancellor at Mulungushi University in Zambia where she is the first woman to be appointed in such a position in the Republic of Zambia. She is a full professor of business leadership. She served in various management positions at the University of South Africa (Unisa) for over 15 years. These positions include Deputy Executive Dean; Executive Director and CEO of Unisa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL); and finally as the Executive Dean of the College of Economic and Management Sciences, the largest on the African continent with a student population of over 200,000 and a staff complement of approximately 900. In all these positions she was the first woman and black person to be appointed. She was previously the Principal and Managing Director of the Academy of Business Management in Botswana from 1988 to 1994, a private university college she founded.
She started her lecturing career in 1984 at the University of Zambia (Now Copperbelt University).
She has also lectured at the University of South Florida (USA), the University of Botswana and Unisa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL). She was one of the founding resource persons on the Thabo Mbeki African Leadership Institute (TMALI) where she developed and taught the leadership module. She holds the following degrees: a doctorate in Business Leadership (DBL), Unisa, RSA; a Master of Science in Management (MSc, Cum Laude - and obtained the Beta Gamma Sigma Award), USF, USA; a Master of Business Administration (MBA, Marketing), BSU, USA; a Bachelor of Arts degree with merit (BA-Econ) UNZA, Zambia; Chartered Institute of Marketing Certificate (CIM) and International Teachers’ Programme (ITP) certificate, LBS-UK, and an American Council on Education (ACE) fellowship. She is a Prosci certified Change management expert which is a recognized international leader in change management research, training, and practices. She has over 135 publications and presentations. Her research has been in the fields of leadership and organization effectiveness (with an emphasis on the African context). She has edited and published several articles in journals and book chapters and books. Her highly acclaimed book: RARE Total Leadership: Leading with the Head, Heart, and Hands was published in 2011. RARE stands for Responsible, Accountable, Relevant and Ethical. She is the co-author of ‘Strategic Leadership Fundamentals: Identifying and knowing the pillars of leading competitively in Africa. She has co-edited high profiled books including Marketing Management: South African perspectives, by Juta &Co, Cape Town, South Africa. Professor Ngambi is a sought after speaker and has made numerous local and international presentations. She has served on a variety of committees, councils, and boards in many countries including her recent presidential appointment on the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) in Zambia. Prof Ngambi has for the past eight years continuously appeared in over 45 various print, radio and TV media including a top cover of African Decisions and CEO Magazines; Engineering News, Management Today, Fin-week, Financial Mail, SABC, CNBC Africa, and ZNBC. She was one of the three finalists in CEO Magazine top South African women of the year in government and Business 2008/9 awards. Other awards include SBL researcher of the year and Unisa woman of the year in Academic category.
