Open and Distance Learning Unit
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) offers distance education programmes of the University. It is a specialist Institute with a core group of staff. Drawing upon content and expertise from the other University departments, it undertakes to design courses, produce materials and oversee their distribution.
The objective of this approach is to enable the University to operate an efficient and effective distance education programme. It also gives some flexibility to the Institute of Distance Education to offer courses from different Schools and to initiate its own programmes in response to emerging needs more rapidly than is the case when all course offerings are determined by teaching departments.
The Institute of Distance Education is committed to providing increased access to quality higher education for students who are unable to attend full time study and who need the flexibility that distance education offers. Through this unit the university has been able to respond to different learning needs of the clients.
The IDE offers options for clients to either enroll for the degree or diploma programmes. In addition, IDE is ready to offer Taylor- made short courses in response to market needs as well as organizing workshops and seminars in areas of client interest.
The IDE courses are open to school leavers, working people and anybody who meets the entry qualifications of 5 “O” level passes at the level of credit or better including Mathematics and English ; and/or relevant diploma qualifications from accredited higher education institutions.
The response to the IDE programmes from the public so far has been very good. We invite all stakeholders: the Government, private sector, non-governmental organizations and private individuals to support and sponsor their employees, children, and relatives to apply for and enroll in the flexible distance education courses. It is a worthwhile investment.
